Off-site & Location Shoots
We bring motion capture to you
Not every project fits inside a studio
At StudioT3D, we provide fully mobile setups for off-site and location shoots, giving you the flexibility to capture wherever your production demands.
Whether you’re working on a feature film set, a brand activation, a live event or a bespoke location, our team delivers and operates the equipment so you can focus on the creative.
What we offer
Portable motion capture setups for body, face, and hands, adaptable to indoor or outdoor environments.
We offer optical, inertial or markerless motion capture shoots on location, meaning that even in difficult environments or with complicated requirements, we will get you the best data possible.
Our kits are designed for quick deployment and efficient setup, supported by experienced technicians to keep everything running smoothly.

Types of Motion Capture
StudioT3D offers three world-class motion capture methods - optical, inertial, and markerless - so you can choose the tool best suited to your creative and technical needs.
Optical
Marker-based motion capture.
How it works: Multiple cameras track performers wearing reflective or LED markers to capture ultra-precise movement data in 3D space.
Why we use it: Ideal for fully detailed capture - body, face, and fingers - with sub-millimetre accuracy and low latency, even in multi‐actor setups.

Inertial
IMU-based motion capture.
How it works: Performers don suits embedded with accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers (IMUs) to capture movement data without cameras.
Why we use it: It's portable & flexible. Captures indoors, outdoors or in tight spaces with fast setup & minimal infrastructure

Markerless
Camera and AI
How it works: Advanced vision based systems use depth cameras and AI to infer a 3D skeletal rig from video footage - no markers, no suits.
Why we use it: Quick to deploy, unobtrusive for actors, and great for natural performances in diverse environments.

Frequently asked questions about on location motion capture shoots
Can you work in any location? Generally yes - as long as we can bring our tripods, cameras and computers. We likely won’t be able to track someone on Scotland’s tallest highland peaks or underneath the channel, but anywhere reasonable, we’ll try to adapt our setup to fit.
How does this differ from using your studios? The core technologies are the same, the difference is flexibility. We bring the systems to your space instead of you coming to us.
Can you travel internationally for shoots? StudioT3D London is limited to travel within the United Kingdom, however we do have international offices in Spain (target3d.eu) and New Zealand (target3d.co.nz) which may be able to assist.
How long does setup and calibration take? Portable mocap systems can be up and running in a few hours, but more complicated shoots can stretch to half a day.
What file formats do you deliver? We deliver industry-standard formats depending on what you need (e.g., FBX, TAK, mp4 video) so your editors and animators can work directly with the files in their pipeline.
Can you capture outdoors? Yes, with certain limitations. Mocap can be captured outside if the environment is controlled enough (lighting, reflective surfaces, weather). We’ll advise on best practices in introductory calls.
Do you provide crew for setup and operation? Absolutely. Our expert team handles all the technical setup, calibration and live operation.
How much space do I need for a location setup? It depends on the action you wish to capture, however we love a challenge. A mocap setup typically needs at least a clear 6m x 6m area, but we’ll work with you to scope the space in advance.
Do you need special power or rigging on site? Most of our systems run on standard 3 pin 13A power supplies, but larger volumes may require additional power. Rigging depends on the actions to be captured, but we bring the rigging required to support basic setup of our system.
Can you work alongside other production crews? Yes - we frequently integrate into existing crews and our producers will be on site to ensure smooth coordination across teams. Our operators focus on the capture while your production team handles the rest.
How long does setup and calibration take? Portable mocap systems can be up and running in a few hours, but more complicated shoots can stretch to half a day.
Is it more expensive to book off-site compared to studio hire? Off-site shoots usually involve additional logistics (transport, setup time, crew travel), so costs can be higher than in-studio. We’ll provide a transparent quote based on your project.
