The Mechanics of Creativity - Premieres Autumn 2025

Updated: Jun 3

LONDON, UK – 4th June, 2025

StudioT3D is proud to announce the release of The Mechanics of Creativity, an innovative and engaging young adult fantasy adventure that brings the magic of virtual production to life. Premiering Autumn 2025, the film blends education and dramatic entertainment to demystify the technology shaping modern filmmaking, and highlight the ways young people can get involved in new media and make their voices heard through storytelling.

Created by director Simon Legrand (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Avatar, Ready Player One), with screenplay by Simon Legrand and Pebbles Gray, the show follows five young London friends who stumble upon a high-tech virtual production studio and discover that they might each have a special place in the world of creativity. Through their lens, audiences get a behind-the-scenes look at how virtual production works; from LED volumes to motion capture and special FX, explained through engaging storytelling and eccentric mentors.

A Collaboration Between Industry and Emerging Talent

Filmed inside an active commercial virtual production studio, The Mechanics of Creativity stands out not just for its innovative content but also for its focus on emerging talent and supporting the voices of young creatives.

The film is produced in partnership with Young Creators UK (YCUK) and Guildhall Production Studio, with educational partners at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the University of East London, and Central Film School, and is supported by Digital Catapult through the Advanced Media Production Network, providing an opportunity for emerging young talent to take part both on-screen and behind the scenes.

The story highlights the collaborative nature of film production - it truly takes a village and requires a broad range of skillsets and talent. We focus on the dynamic nature of collaboration between industry and young talent, and the wealth of creativity and new perspectives that can be unlocked when we adapt and transform traditional ways of working.

About YCUK: YCUK is the UK’s first impact-led creative agency. It is co–owned and co-run by young people, reimagining how creativity works with underrepresented youth, and ensuring their voices are heard in the industry with equity. They are currently building Europe’s largest youth owned creative space, and are one of the largest employers of diverse creative talent in the UK. YCUK champions youth and youth culture to break into and disrupt industry norms and in the past 2 years they have delivered work for NHS England, Jamie Oliver and the MOBO’s. Over the coming years YCUK seeks to continue pioneering new educational frameworks and pathways to success in industry. YCUK harnesses a disruptive and joyful culture to deliver unique work and create real change through their 4 pillars of service: cultural activation, youth development, creative agency and value sharing.

A Stellar Cast and Crew

Featuring a talented cast of young talent including newcomers Jaiden Adonteng and Holy Boka, and returning to the screen Alexandra Scheidt (La Cuidadora, Circle of Life), Alice Thoma, (The Ghost Within, Bubblegum Club) and Joshua Taylor (Big Mood, Heartstopper).

Also featuring guest stars Charlie Rawes (Dune, Ted Lasso) Ace Ruele, (Ant-Man, Andor, EastEnders), Ruchika Jain (The Sandman, The Buckingham Murders), and Kimane Juneau (The Diary of a Black Man); the film brings humour, heart, and creativity to explore the world of filmmaking through the lens of young adults in a way never seen before.

Executive Produced by Stacia Pfeiffer (Hijack, I Came By), and lensed by Dankuro Shinma (Portraits of Dangerous Women, Iceland is Best) the film is shot entirely in a state-of-the-art virtual production environment, making it as much a real-world demonstration of our emerging capabilities in film production, as it is an engaging story.

Simon LeGrand, Director, said: “This project is the embodiment of the creative drive of London. What started as a small project amongst friends suddenly attracted some of the best people in their respective crafts, as well as incredible young talent. I’m humbled by the amazing team that is coming together to create this piece.”

Cristoff Taylor, Founder of YCUK said: "The Mechanics of Creativity deeply resonated with YCUK, a hub that nurtures talented young creatives from diverse backgrounds. It’s truly inspiring to see young, gifted individuals at the heart of such an incredible project. We hope it paves the way for more emerging creatives to enter the industry.”

Allan Rankin, Managing Director of Target3D, said: “The first production by StudioT3D to bring the wonder of Virtual Production to life in a way that is engaging, well made and understandable. This collaboration embodies the nature of the production industry as a whole. We have many professionals and nationalities converging in the UK creating this project. Our industry partners from commercial to education and supported by Digital Catapult are excited to show The Mechanics of Creativity in a dramatic way. Special thanks to Simon Legrand’s determination to bring our dream to life.”

Stacia Pfeiffer, Executive Producer, said: “I am thrilled to be working with Target3D, YCUK and our partners to deliver this project. From the moment I heard the premise - I thought, this sounds a lot like my own journey into film-making. A little chaos, a lot of magic, and a whole cast of colourful characters showing you the ropes as you go. There is no better way to learn than to have the courage to just get stuck in and try things out - and that spirit of innovation, rule breaking and out–of-the-box thinking is central to the spirit of this production - both on camera, and behind the scenes.”

Christopher Kenna from BA Diversity Media said: ”GenB TV was launched to showcase the incredible talent and diverse stories from Black British and Multi-Ethnic communities — and The Mechanics of Creativity is the perfect fit! This ground-breaking film brings together an international team, both on-screen and behind the scenes, embodying the kind of bold, inspiring content we champion. A top-tier youth drama with a powerful message about breaking into the creative industry, The Mechanics of Creativity is something we haven’t seen since the iconic Dubplate Drama on Channel 4. We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this series to audiences worldwide on GenB TV and GenB Movies this autumn — be sure to find us on TV or via our Mobile Apps and Get ready for something truly special!”
